Bell Beans is an erect, leafy, cool season annual deep rooted legume, growing from 2 to 4 feet tall. Bell Beans grows during cool weather when other vetches and clovers are relatively dormant, but does not tolerate heat well. Bell beans performs best on well drained, sandy Loams to clay soil. Bell beans is traditionaly used as a cover crop, It is capable of producing large amounts of dry matter and accumulating large quantities of nitrogen (N),part of which is available to subsequent crops. The large, deep taproot is ideal for opening up heavy, compacted soils. Although incorporated leaves decompose rapidly, stem residues persist longer and help to loosen clay soils.
